Mitchell's presence brings credibility to steroid probe
Pings: 1 - Written by Jafo Thursday, 30 March 2006
SI.com: What are your initial impressions from the Bud Selig news conference on Thursday? Tom Verducci: My first impression is that the investigation will be further-reaching than I thought it was going to be. I originally suspected that they were interested in looking at Barry Bonds, Jason Giambi and Gary Sheffield, and I think that's where they'll begin. But to take them at their word, expect them to go much further than that. The trail of evidence doesn't stop at those three. SI.com: So you are confident that this investigation isn't just a p.r. move by MLB? Verducci: It has to be more than just a p.r. venture, because I can't see someone like Sen. George Mitchell putting his reputation on the line for something like that. The findings are going to be made public. If this is a sham of an investigation, it's not just Selig here who takes a hit, it's George Mitchell.
