Major League Baseball is reportedly expected to launch an investigation into past steroid use by its players, with former Senate majority leader George Mitchell reportedly heading the panel.
The New York Times reported late Wednesday that the announcement of Mitchell's appointment could come as early as Thursday. The paper also reported that, while Mitchell will head the investigation, someone else will handle the day- to-day activities.
Mitchell served on Commissioner Bud Selig's baseball economic panel in the late 1990s and is currently a director with the Boston Red Sox. He served as a senator from Maine (D) from 1989-1995.
San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds will also reportedly get a close look in the investigation. Bonds once again became synonymous with alleged steroid use after the book "Game of Shadows," was released.
