Israeli special forces captured five Shiite militants in a helicopter raid on the Lebanese city of Baalbek overnight, and Hezbollah launched a record number of rockets into Israel Wednesday morning that left one Israeli dead and 19 injured.
Thousands of Israeli soldiers streamed into southern Lebanon on Tuesday, clashingwith fighters in at least half a dozen towns as Israel intensified its ground campaign to dislodge Hezbollah strongholds that have withstood three weeks of aerial bombardment. Israel also resumed wide-scale air attacks after, a 48-hour slowdown following an airstrike that killed dozens of women and children in the Lebanese village of Qana.
The helicopter raids started late Tuesday night and continued into Wednesday, witnesses and Israeli officials said. Commando forces landed at the Dar al-Hikma Hospital and engaged in fierce firefights that lasted several hours.
