Will the US Nationalise its Banks to save its economy?
Pings: 0 - Written by Rick Adlam Thursday, 09 October 2008
Is the US planning to Nationalise its Banks? Its looking a lot like socialism [some say communism] to many on the republican side of US politics, but deregulation and lax practices and auditing have left many US and European banks without liquidity, and that's the big problem that isn't going away according to Mr Mortgage. US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson is weighing plans for the US government to invest in banks as the next step in trying to resolve the deepening credit crisis. These capital injections are something that Secretary Paulson is actively considering, White House Press Secretary Dana Perino said in a briefing in Washington. She also said President George W. Bush will meet with Group of Seven finance ministers at the White House on October 11. Paulson told reporters in Washington on Wednesday that legislation Congress passed last week to rescue financial institutio...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Península Valdés
Pings: 0 - Written by The World by Road Thursday, 09 October 2008
Well, folks, the zig-zagging of the southern cone of South America has officially begun!  Saying that we have covered some serious ground since leaving Bahia Blanca, Argentina would be an understatement.  Over the dizzying 1,300+ miles that we have driven in 10 days, we have toured the East coast of Argentina all the way to the West coast of Chile.  The two coasts of the continent, as well as areas pocketing the international border are where most of our designated targets have been so far.  The first stop of this most recent segment was UNESCO World Heritage Site, Península Valdés. It has been listed as such mainly due to the various marine mammals that are naturally drawn to it's coastline and coastal waters.  The main draw year-round are the Southern Right Whales out in the protected waters of Golfo Nuevo and Golfo San José, while at various points of the year you can find se...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Person of the Week: The Dagna Family
Pings: 0 - Written by The World by Road Wednesday, 01 October 2008
With the many people that inspire us and help to make the expedition a success we have decided to start a little segment called “The Person of the Week”.  It is exactly what it sounds like...each week we will present you with an individual that has impacted TWBR. This week we would like to call attention a whole family of very kind and generous individuals…so without further ado: the Dagna Family of Bahia Blanca, Argentina. In a previous blog entry we mentioned that our first stop out of Buenos Aires would be at the home of Alfredo Dagna, one of Bouey’s dad’s colleagues in the bio-solids composting industry.  Ever since our troubles with the customs officials began over a month ago, it became clear that Alfredo is a well-connected man, always offering up the names and numbers of lawyers and various government employees that could potentially assist in our fight.  He patie...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Thailand take on the Olympic torch shame on Thailand
Pings: 0 - Written by Melissa Moreno Friday, 11 April 2008
I am very sorry to here that Thailand will have the Olympic torch here. But what can you expect of a government that thinks Burma’s military government is nice and can not count dead people. The Chinese government has displayed happy feeling that Thailand will take on the torch and that the government have assured that no problem will accrued. The Thai people are not known for their willingness to demonstrate for other people if someone not gives them money for the trouble. When the big rallies are in Bangkok there is “punters” giving people 500 THB and a free meals to go to Bangkok if not they would not bothered. So I really do not think their will be any problem with Thai people protesting they don’t not really care or they are too tired after water splashing. Write Comment (0 Comments)

National Park?
Pings: 0 - Written by The World by Road Thursday, 13 March 2008
When picturing a national park, most of us probably think of rangers that help to protect the wildlife and answer visitors questions about the surrounding area and the flora and fauna that reside there. As you get farther and farther from the main tourist tracks in the world, the standard and definition of national parks changes dramatically. In Mauritania there is a park called "Banc d'Arguin National Park." It is a World Heritage Site, and like many other World Heritage sites we have visited on our journey, it has a long way to go before one could call it protected. It does, however, offer something that no other national park has that we have been to...vastness. The "entrance" to the park is a GPS coordinate listed on a small map provided by the park office in the small town 200kms away. This map has a list of GPS coordinates that we tested before we left for the park, of whi...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Mauri...what?
Pings: 0 - Written by The World by Road Wednesday, 05 March 2008
A couple of years ago the TWBR route began to take shape. When first planning a route for a grand voyage like this, the sky is the limit. Countries that you never even knew existed become possibilities; geography becomes a daily topic of conversation. It is quite interesting just how large some countries are that probably 90% of people do not know exist. Mauritania is one of those places. With a population of only 3 million people in just over 1 million square kilometers, this country is a giant desert with large expanses containing very little signs of life. For most of us the Sahara desert is something that we read about in books or hear about in romantic adventure stories while we are growing up. The last week or so, however, the Sahara desert is the place that we have been calling home and although signs of life are few and far between, they are quite intense when you do find t...Write Comment (0 Comments)

40th Anniversary of the Tet Offensive
Pings: 0 - Written by Karridine Wednesday, 30 January 2008
al-Qaeda's High Hopes Give-Em-Help-Harry! Above are two links of interest, what with today being the 40th anniversary of the Tet Offensive, and these days Harry Reid is waving his yellow-trimmed WHITE FLAG as hard as he can, but too many Americans actually want to help free the Iraqis, so we're not surrendering any time soon. And above that, al-Qaeda's hopes of duplicating the 'success' of the North Vietnamese Tet Offensive, with blatant disregard for the reality of that very offensive:the offensive was a military disaster for communist forces, and only benefited the Communists because it shaped mainland American opinion against freedom and self-determination for the Vietnamese, quickly triggering the kind of surrender Harry Reid and his loathsome friends are seeking. That very retreat from victory, AFTER victory, and BECAUSE OF media distortions (see Dan Rather, Walter Cron...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Here comes the Sun..dit ta do do.
Pings: 0 - Written by The World by Road Wednesday, 09 January 2008
The Hurtigruten has been steaming its way, or I guess nowadays you would say powering its way up and down the Norwegian coastline for the last 100 plus year. During that time the operation has gone from one small boat to a large fleet with boats picking up passengers daily from 34 ports, starting the trip north from Bergen and returning south from Kirkenes. Long ago the boat was more purposeful as it carried mail up and down the coast to all of the hard to reach towns in the fjords and islands along the coast. Today not much mail is transported back and forth by these ships. Now the cargo is hundreds happy vacationers looking for a diversion from their work or daily lives. For lunch today we dined in the main restaurant. Lining the walls of both sides of the room are windows that give everyone a spectacularly changing view of the scenery as it passes by. Today this moving view was t...Write Comment (0 Comments)

McDonalds is Getting Closer to Opening Date
Pings: 0 - Written by The Dane Sunday, 06 January 2008
It seems like the - at least on this site - highly controversial restaurant of McDonalds is about to open their doors, they have had March planned for opening all along so this is not a huge surprise. We were walking by the construction site the other day and saw them lay out the McDonald's letters for their sign on the ground outside, so I just had to take a few snapshots with my cell phone. We have had a poll on the front page for a few weeks to see if the general public here is for or against the new McDonalds restaurant opening here in Dumaguete, I am quite surprised to see the high number of people who are against it. But I am sure it will be a success from day one. Write Comment (0 Comments)

More Important Than LGF
Pings: 0 - Written by Karridine Saturday, 05 January 2008
More important even than the tremendously valuable public service done for investigative humans by the website Little Green Footballs (and, of course, its owner/proprietor Charles Johnson) is the knowledge that Islam has a history of awaiting Two Holy Ones, the Point (Qaim) round Whom all the Prophets of God are supposed to revolve, and The Rightly-Guided One (Mahdi) Who will lead all who truly believe in the Oneness of God to awareness and truth and harmony. When He come, say the clergy. IF He comes, say rational non-believers. And LGF continues, very appropriately, to post news items pertinent to the Islamic jihad AGAINST rational freedom of thought; and post news items of American and European responses to those attacks, responses both cravenly capitulative and courageously opposing. Yet there is one option (Capitulate/Give Up vs Destroy Them All) NOT examined at LGF, prec...Write Comment (0 Comments)

The Pope condemns the climate change prophets By SIMON CALDWELL :: Daily Mail UK
Pings: 0 - Written by Hans Gruen Wednesday, 12 December 2007
Pope Benedict XVI has launched a surprise attack on climate change prophets of doom, warning them that any solutions to global warming must be based on firm evidence and not on dubious ideology. The leader of more than a billion Roman Catholics suggested that fears over man-made emissions melting the ice caps and causing a wave of unprecedented disasters were nothing more than scare-mongering. The German-born Pontiff said that while some concerns may be valid it was vital that the international community based its policies on science rather than the dogma of the environmentalist movement.
