Klinsmann for U.S. Soccer?
Pings: 2 - Written by The Foo Monday, 24 July 2006
A lot of people are saying that Jurgen Klinsmann is the man for the vacant U.S Soccer coaching job and it should be given to him. Without a doubt, yes but I believe it is more complicated than that. The problem is - Klinsmann himself. In his press conference when he was announcing he was stepping down, he said he was burnt out of coaching. Hasn't he only been the German coach for less than 2 years? ... a very short coaching time indeed to be talking about being burnt out, don't you think? Klinsmann is a smart guy (tactically and strategically) but what I question is his coaching longivity and tenacity. Also, he loves the USA mainly because it puts him out of and away from the spotlight. Making him the US soccer coach will probably put him back into the spotlight of the hungry american sports media especially at a time where US soccer is needing a big time media and popularity boost....Write Comment (0 Comments)

Armstrong threatened my life, claims LeMond
Pings: 1 - Written by Jafo Sunday, 25 June 2006
Former Tour de France champion Greg LeMond has claimed that he was threatened by fellow American Lance Armstrong for having criticised the seven-time race winner's association with a doctor implicated in doping affairs. LeMond, who won the Tour de France in 1986, 1989, 1990, said that he had come under pressure from Armstrong and his circle of friends after saying in 2001 that he was disappointed at the Texan cyclist's association with Italian sports doctor Michele Ferrari. LeMond said Sunday that the threats continued after 2001. "Lance threatened me. He threatened my wife, my business, my life," LeMond told French sports daily L'Equipe. "His biggest threat consisted of saying that he (Armstrong) would find ten people to testify that I took EPO," said LeMond, who was the first American to win the Tour de France. LeMond hit out at the international cycling union (UC...Write Comment (0 Comments)

NASCAR Fan's Guide to Formula-1
Pings: 1 - Written by Steve Saturday, 27 May 2006
Tomorrow (Sunday May 28) The Grand Prix of Monaco will be held, the seventh of eighteen races in the 2006 season. Unfortunately for F-1 fans, the race will be taped-delayed thanks to CBS. But for any NASCAR fans who might come across the F-1 race, here are a few clues. Cars turn both left AND right, usually one following the other. Race will happen within a prescribed time (1:00 PM local), whether it rains or not. Race will continue until prescribed number of laps are completed, whether it rains or not. Contact with opponents car, wall or anything other than the track surface will usually results in severe damage beyond the scope of duct-tape repairs. Drivers may speak a native language other than English (optional). Races will occur in more than one country (see #4). US Manufacturers (Ford, GM and Chrysler) are not excluded from joining Formula-1, along with others s...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Cubs' Lee, Red Sox' Ortiz Reach Extensions
Pings: 1 - Written by Jafo Tuesday, 11 April 2006
NL batting champion Derrek Lee and the Cubs agreed to a five-year, $65 million contract, a deal expected to be announced today. "It's fairly likely something will be worked out," agent Casey Close said yesterday. "We still have to iron out some things." The Cubs called a news conference for today but did not specify its subject, and Cubs GM Jim Hendry declined comment. Lee is making $8 million in the final season of a three-year, $22.5 million deal. His new contract calls for a $13 million annual salary from 2006 to 2010 and contains a no-trade clause, one person familiar with the agreement said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Late last week, Lee said he would break off negotiations for the rest of the season if the sides did not reach an agreement by last Saturday, but he later softened his stance. · FOUR MORE YEARS FOR ORTIZ: Red Sox slugger David Ortiz agreed to a...Write Comment (0 Comments)

After Stormy Offseason, Nationals Lack Electricity
Pings: 1 - Written by Jafo Tuesday, 11 April 2006
The Washington Nationals' home opener this afternoon against the New York Mets will have little of the momentum that accompanied last year's debut, when Washington turned out to hail the return of baseball to the nation's capital after an absence of more than 33 years. Vice President Cheney, not President Bush, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. There are expected to be empty seats, a far cry from last year's glitzy, celebrity-filled sellout. Ticket sales and profits for the season are likely to be down as well. As the team begins its second season at RFK Stadium, the Nationals are coming off an offseason filled with controversy. But instead of typical baseball debates, such as who would play shortstop, there were disputes over how much baseball would contribute for a new, publicly built stadium along the Anacostia River waterfront. Eighteen months after the franchise was ...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Singh in the Driver's Seat
Pings: 1 - Written by Jafo Friday, 07 April 2006
One of golf's longest hitters off the tee and one of the game's chronically injured and slightly above-average ball strikers were the most proficient players Thursday in the first round of the 70th Masters at a hard, fast and newly lengthened Augusta National course. Vijay Singh, the No. 2 player in the world and 2000 Masters champion, always has been able to bash drives 300 yards and beyond, and often had short irons in his hand on approaches to the slick putting surfaces on this mild, sun-splashed day. With a run of three straight birdies on the back nine and one last saved par at the 465-yard 18th hole, he posted a 5-under 67, his lowest first round in 13 appearances on this storied course, which is now playing at a record 7,445 yards, 155 yards longer than the 2005 event. "The conditions today favored us, not the [five] holes they changed," said Singh, a native of Fiji and th...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Bonds suffers wrath of San Diego crowd
Pings: 1 - Written by Jafo Tuesday, 04 April 2006
San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds endured a hostile reception on the opening day of the season on Monday, with a sold-out Petco Park making clear their views on allegations of the outfielder's illegal steroid use. At the start of a campaign in which Bonds could become the greatest home-run hitter in major league history, the 41-year-old was booed at every opportunity by San Diego Padres fans and even had to remove a syringe from the field that was tossed in his direction from the crowd. "That's the first time somebody threw something like that," Bonds told reporters of the incident that occurred as he trotted toward the dugout after the bottom of the eighth inning. "I just put it off the field so no one would get hurt." When asked whether he thought a fan was possibly sending a message about his alleged steroid use, Bonds replied: "I don't know, ask him. If tha...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Yankees open floodgates on Zito, A's
Pings: 1 - Written by Jafo Tuesday, 04 April 2006
Let the Murderers' Row comparisons commence. If the Yankees' lineup is expected to mount a charge at 1,000 runs this season, Monday night was a good start for the Bombers. New York handed Oakland a 15-2 pounding on Opening Day, using a seven-run second inning to chase Barry Zito from the game in the shortest start of the former Cy Young Award winner's career. "Tonight was a special night," said Johnny Damon, who went 3-for-7 with two runs scored in his first game as a Yankee. "If this is any indication, this is going to be a fun year." "You're excited to play Opening Day, and you know that we're capable of doing all the things we saw tonight," said manager Joe Torre. "It was great just to see it happen." Alex Rodriguez's grand slam was the big blow of the second inning, while Hideki Matsui added a three-run shot as part of a four-run fourth inning. Matsui fin...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Nats' Opener Comes With a Lot of Questions
Pings: 1 - Written by Jafo Monday, 03 April 2006
Jim Bowden has been in baseball for more than two decades, and has never experienced anything like it. Frank Robinson is entering his 51st season in the sport, and, likewise, this is new to him. "Odd," he called this spring, and even in the context of the Washington Nationals, that it was. The Nationals have weathered more distractions and indignities than any team in the new millennium -- being purchased by Major League Baseball in 2002, playing part of their "home" schedule in Puerto Rico in 2003 and '04, moving from Montreal to the nation's capital for last season. Though the team is still owned by MLB -- and thus, is unlike any other team in pro sports -- a source with knowledge of the situation said yesterday that Commissioner of Baseball Bud Selig is likely to pick an owner from among eight groups within two weeks, thus ending years of uncertainty. Yet MLB has given timel...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Mitchell's presence brings credibility to steroid probe
Pings: 1 - Written by Jafo Thursday, 30 March 2006
SI.com: What are your initial impressions from the Bud Selig news conference on Thursday? Tom Verducci: My first impression is that the investigation will be further-reaching than I thought it was going to be. I originally suspected that they were interested in looking at Barry Bonds, Jason Giambi and Gary Sheffield, and I think that's where they'll begin. But to take them at their word, expect them to go much further than that. The trail of evidence doesn't stop at those three. SI.com: So you are confident that this investigation isn't just a p.r. move by MLB? Verducci: It has to be more than just a p.r. venture, because I can't see someone like Sen. George Mitchell putting his reputation on the line for something like that. The findings are going to be made public. If this is a sham of an investigation, it's not just Selig here who takes a hit, it's George Mitchell.Write Comment (0 Comments)

MLB to launch steroid investigation
Pings: 1 - Written by Jafo Thursday, 30 March 2006
Major League Baseball is reportedly expected to launch an investigation into past steroid use by its players, with former Senate majority leader George Mitchell reportedly heading the panel. The New York Times reported late Wednesday that the announcement of Mitchell's appointment could come as early as Thursday. The paper also reported that, while Mitchell will head the investigation, someone else will handle the day- to-day activities. Mitchell served on Commissioner Bud Selig's baseball economic panel in the late 1990s and is currently a director with the Boston Red Sox. He served as a senator from Maine (D) from 1989-1995. San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds will also reportedly get a close look in the investigation. Bonds once again became synonymous with alleged steroid use after the book "Game of Shadows," was released. According to the book, written by rep...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Gibbs Says Campbell Will Get Shot at No. 2
Pings: 1 - Written by Jafo Wednesday, 29 March 2006
Washington Redskins Coach Joe Gibbs said Wednesday that Jason Campbell, a first-round draft pick last year, will be given a chance in training camp and during the preseason to win the team's No. 2 quarterback job behind starter Mark Brunell. Campbell was third on the depth chart last season behind Brunell and Patrick Ramsey. But with Ramsey having been traded to the New York Jets, Gibbs said Campbell will compete with free-agent newcomer Todd Collins for the job as next season's primary backup. Gibbs said he and his assistant coaches will make the decision based on the play of Campbell and Collins during the exhibition games. "He'll play a lot in the preseason," Gibbs said during the NFC coaches' breakfast on the final day of the annual league meeting. "You'll probably get a good feel for that coming out of the preseason. We'll see how they play, and everyone will have an...Write Comment (0 Comments)

George Mason Is a Giant-Killer
Pings: 1 - Written by Jafo Monday, 27 March 2006
Jai Lewis hung the shreds of what remained of the basketball net around his thick neck. Lamar Butler, flashing a smile as wide as he is tall, tucked the string he had clipped from the net under the bill of his cap. Coach Jim Larranaga, 56, shimmied into a freshly printed T-shirt emblazoned with "Washington, D.C. Regional Champions," while delirious George Mason fans, their voices raw from screaming, snapped photos of the wild celebration with digital cameras and cellphones. All of the detritus, no doubt, will be preserved for decades to come as mementos of the greatest day of their lives: The day the school in Fairfax pulled off one of the biggest upsets in college basketball history by toppling top-seeded Connecticut, a two-time national champion, to earn a trip to the NCAA men's basketball tournament's Final Four. The Patriots, the team with a starting five from the Maryland su...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Bruins win a stunner
Pings: 1 - Written by Jafo Friday, 24 March 2006
It was more improbable than Tyus Edney dribbling the length of the court to beat Missouri in 1995, more impossible than any UCLA basketball coach, player or fan could have imagined. The much-anticipated game between West Coast powers last night scripted an ending that will be replayed over and over as future NCAA Tournaments arrive. UCLA is alive and fortunate and Gonzaga is stunned and going home, the result of a 73-71 Bruins victory in a Sweet 16 game in which the Zags led for more than 39 minutes before 19,596 at the Oakland Arena. One shining moment became 10 unbelievable seconds. The first lead Ben Howland's team owned came with 9.5 ticks left, when freshman forward Luc Richard Mbah a Moute's layup officially brought the Bruins all the way back from a nine-point deficit with a little more than three minutes remaining.
