Diving in Dumaguete
Pings: 1 - Written by Rudolf Brust Tuesday, 01 January 2008
Dumaguete, is the capital of the province Negros Oriental, in the central Visayas. You can get to Dumaguete either with a 60 minutes flight from Manila or by bus and ferry from Cebu. Most of the Dumaguete dive-sides, hotels and dive center are 15 kilometer south of the City in the beautiful little town of Dauin. Diving in the Philippines don't has to hide from any "big" destination in the world of diving. It is a paradise for macro-lovers and many professional underwater- photographers are coming to Dumaguete. The diveresorts around Dauin are also the starting-point for full daytrips to the well knows surrounding islands like Apo Island, Sumilon Island or Siquijor Island. Some dive-operators are also offering Island-hoping to the more remote Islands of Bohol and Malapasqua. The dark volcanic sand is home to a enormous variety of critters. The 15 divesites around Dauin can be reached wit...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Skiing in Norwich
Pings: 1 - Written by Andrew Hemings Thursday, 18 October 2007
Helen and I went skiing at the Norwich Ski School yesterday, it was fantastic. I think we were all very nervous when we got there, the ski slopes looked huge. Nevertheless, it was so funny watching everybody walk around, with the skis off, they looked like little toy robots. When we got to the ski slope, I realized the kids were far better skiers than me, despite a few of them falling over here and there. Most were better at me at braking, but in terms of manoeuvring, at least I have some dignity in being able to do that without falling over. So what can you do when you're going downward, with the bottom of the hill rushing up to meat you? Learn how to ski so you don’t tumble and fall like an idiot. Probably the most hilarious part of it all was watching Aaron trying to climb the hill. It seamed like every step he took up the slope, he slid back down two. Fortunately I didn't fa...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Training with the wrong mindset
Pings: 1 - Written by Andrew Hemings Wednesday, 04 April 2007
I attended training yesterday with totally the wrong mindset. I felt lethargic, lacking energy, and mentally exhausted. I’ve tried to think of a good reason for this, but there really isn’t one, maybe it’s just one of ‘those days’. The trouble was that this seriously impacted the effectiveness of my training. As when you think you can’t do something you won’t, and that was very evident during whilst warming up. I struggled with the some of the simplest of things such as push-ups and sit-ups. This continued as I was unable to get my stances low, and my forms were not good quality, pathetic really. Nevertheless, I’m not going to dwell on it, I just needed to get it off my mind whilst I was still disappointed with myself. Learning to think and train in a way that you don’t get overwhelmed is important. If you get into the wrong frame of mind, thinking you can’t do ...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Is it possible I’ve been overtraining?
Pings: 1 - Written by Andrew Hemings Saturday, 31 March 2007
Overtraining, I didn't imagine that I could or would do this to myself. However, in my eagerness to excel, I've managed to push myself to the point where I’ve started to grow weaker and pickup stupid injuries. It's strange that the very thing that develops and strengthens, you can end up weakening you if you do it too much. Recently, my body has struggled to achieve what it was able to sail through just a week ago. So I’ve decided to take two full days of rest, and miss Saturday’s makeup class, to help my body recover. Well, I guess one could call it resting. I still had all of the washing, cleaning and gardening to do. Nevertheless, I’m not do any weight-lifting, or Kuk Sool training that I’d normally do at home. Mind you, I'd trade the housework for Kuk Sool training any day! Write Comment (0 Comments)

Writing Bluemoonblog has taught me, about me..
Pings: 1 - Written by Andrew Hemings Wednesday, 28 February 2007
I’ve been reading some of my previous postings on this blog, and I’ve realised in the short time I've been blogging, I've have learned quite a few of things about myself: I have developed in my understanding of, and expectations of Kuk Sool Won martial arts. I really look at things differently now, and can see the bigger picture. Furthermore, I see my limitations as challenges, and my strengths as opportunities. My appreciation of the Kuk Sool Won instructors and fellow students who have guided me on my journey, does not diminish, and continues to grow. It is wonderful to think that I have had the chance to meet, interact, and be trained by these unselfish and motivating people. I anticipate many more opportunities to explore the depths of my martial art in the future. I can greatly appreciate those fellow Kuk Sool Won students who come to class with a healthy, encouraging, ...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Role models and my goals
Pings: 1 - Written by Andrew Hemings Friday, 23 February 2007
As most of you know, seven months ago, I started Kuk Sool Won journey. Originally, my objective was to loose of some weight and learn a martial art in the process. Still, things do change and my goals are becoming organic and have greater substance and value. Even though I’ve lost 2 and a half stone, I still want to loose some more weight, but my goals have matured with my training. I want to be like Kuk Sa Nim - In Hyuk Suh and Kwan Jahng nim Martin. Those people were awesome! I want to live Kuk Sool Won! I don't just want to study it, or practice it, but live it. When I look around, it’s very evident that society is missing genuine role models, well that is my belief. These men, in my humble opinion, symbolize and embody what a role model should be. Before Kuk Sool found me, the most influential person and my greatest role model had been Homer Simpson. For 15 years I modelled...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Hints and tips for successful sparring
Pings: 1 - Written by Andrew Hemings Wednesday, 07 February 2007
I’ve only been sparing for only a short while now, about seven months, but I enjoy the challenge and excitement when I’ve sparred successfully. During this time I’ve accumulated a few tips and strategies to spar effectively. When sparring there are key elements to keep in mind, which will help you be successful in your attacks, counter attacks and defensive techniques. Although, not set in stone, they are useful for many situations, and have been helpful in my own training. Never, ever take your eyes off your opponent, eye to eye contact is your target. Avoid looking where you intend to strike as you give your attack away to your opponent. Use your peripheral vision when fighting to enable you to see the opponent’s whole body. This way you will be able to read your opponent’s intentions. Keep your elbows close, so positioned, that your chest is protected at all times. Kee...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Kung Pow - a stupidly funny film!
Pings: 1 - Written by Andrew Hemings Sunday, 04 February 2007
I watched Kung Pow over the weekend, and I have to tell you this movie was one of the funniest films I have seen in some time. As a Kung Fu comedy, like Scary Movie et al. It was quite refreshing compared to some of the so called comedies. I knew it was going to be quite a movie when, at the beginning, as a new born baby, the chosen one, fought off many attackers and rolled down the hill. Half way down, a woman picked him up and said "arr, so cute" and continued to roll him further down the hill. Even though there were some very stupid scenes, I really enjoyed this movie. Perhaps, it’s due in part to my rather warped sense of humour, I was doubled up in laughter throughout. The characters include a kung fu master named Moon View, who is in fact, more bovine than you expect; a martial arts student who has developed his own style, which he uses to battle his opponents and an armada of...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Kuk Sool sparring, a new challenge
Pings: 1 - Written by Andrew Hemings Sunday, 28 January 2007
Last nights training session was around sparring, and here I am, it’s 2 o’clock in the morning and I’m scrutinising my performance to see what I could have done to: a) Protect myself . b) Get in some effective strikes. I have been training in Kuk Sool Won for a little over seven months, I’m at blue stripe belt level, so I’m one of the lowest grades in the class. Now that’s not a bad thing, because we all have to start somewhere. And in that seven months, I have progressed through white belt, to yellow stripe, to yellow belt and now a blue stripe. So I listened with some apprehension to Pu Sa Bum Nim when he informed the class that students will be sparring with every member of the class including the instructors and black belts. I’ve watched some of the higher grades sparring and some of the stuff they do is… well, incredible. At this moment in time, I’m not e...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Twas the night before grading
Pings: 1 - Written by Andrew Hemings Friday, 08 December 2006
Less than 24 hours before my Kuk Sool Blue stripe grading. Looking back on the past 7 months (has it already only been that long?) I can see that I have come a long way in my understanding of techniques and forms. I am beginning to feel like a real martial arts practitioner. Still, a large part of me still wonders whether I will be up to the challenge on Saturday. There is still so much that I don't know. I’m worried that I won't be able to recall everything that I've learned, but I hope that it will be sufficient. Seriously, I'm getting psyched for this, I'm going to be like Luke Skywalker, letting the Force guide me. If all goes well, then this wonderfully challenging chapter in my Kuk Sool development will come to a close and I can look forward to the next chapter as well as Christmas. Nerves……..never before has the thought of going for a walk just for the heck of it had...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Sparring confidence
Pings: 1 - Written by Andrew Hemings Saturday, 02 December 2006
During the “non contact” sparring warm-up, I got struck in the shin twice, once when I kicked at the same time as my opponent, the other when I blocked an incoming kick. Now, I’ve got used to pain over the last few months, so it’s not usually a problem, however, I have got to say that my shin really smarts and I will defiantly be investing in some protection. You’d think having an extra layer of fat over me bones would help cushion the blow, but it doesn’t. Nevertheless, I Have got to tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed the sparring, as I was able defend myself much better by using some of the defensive/attacking techniques I have been thought over the past few weeks. I did still get hit, but a lot less, and I could feel my improvement. I found myself able to very quickly plan and execute an attack and my defensive moves were responsive and automatic. My stamina has impr...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Bunny-hops, stretching & my gluteus maximus
Pings: 1 - Written by Andrew Hemings Sunday, 26 November 2006
I know that exercise is supposed to be good for you and has huge range of positive effects. So why is it, that after a really good workout, the type that leaves you full of energy and wanting to do more, can’t I bloody walk! At Fridays Kuk Sool class, part of our warm-up consisted of a range of lower body and leg such as bunny-hops and stretches, and lots of them. Two days later and it hurts to stand, sit and walk, so I’m screwed at the moment. Mind you it’s worth the pain if my fitness continues o improve, I’ve just got to get Julie and the kids to believe me now.Write Comment (0 Comments)
