US pushed groups to shun Hamas-led govt: Hamas
Pings: 1 - Written by Jafo Monday, 20 March 2006
Palestinian militant group Hamas accused the United States on Monday of putting pressure on rival Palestinian groups to shun a Hamas-led government, leaving the Islamic group to govern alone. Hamas's failure to attract any partners and its move to appoint Hamas loyalists to top ministerial posts could bolster U.S. and Israeli efforts to isolate the new government. The group's leader-in-exile Khaled Meshaal, in Yemen as part of a tour to gain political and financial support, said Israel could use a government solely run by Hamas as a pretext to launch strikes at Palestinians. "United ...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Iraq is now in 'a terrible civil war', admits Allawi
Pings: 1 - Written by Jafo Monday, 20 March 2006
One of Iraq's most pro-western figures and an ex-prime minister yesterday became the first of its leaders to express what most of his compatriots fear: the country is in the grip of a "terrible" civil war. Iyad Allawi's acknowledgement of the violence sweeping the nation was not the sort of tribute America or Britain were hoping for on the eve of today's third anniversary of their invasion. John Reid, the Defence Secretary, who was visiting British troops in Basra yesterday, had argued that those predicting that Iraq was heading towards civil war were siding with terrorists. But Mr...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Hamas premier-designate presents new cabinet list to Abbas
Pings: 1 - Written by Jafo Monday, 20 March 2006
Hamas prime minister-designate Ismail Haneya presented the list of his new cabinet and its program to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas as they started a meeting in Gaza City on Sunday evening, sources said. Hamas'efforts to form a national unity government failed four weeks after Haneya was tasked with cabinet making following the radical group's victory in the Jan. 25 parliamentary elections. All other parties in the parliament including the former ruling Fatah movement refused to join the Hamas-led cabinet because Hamas rebuffed their demands to abide by existing agreements with ...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Monitors Cast Doubts on Belarus Election
Pings: 1 - Written by Jafo Monday, 20 March 2006
European observers said Monday that Belarus' presidential election did not meet international standards for a free and fair vote. Official results showed iron-fisted incumbent Alexander Lukashenko winning a third term by an overwhelming margin. The elections were overseen by monitors from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and the Council of Europe. ``The March 19 presidential election did not meet the required international standards for free and fair elections,'' said Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Fla., who chairs the OSCE parliamentary assembly. Central Election Co...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Hamas leader forms new cabinet, minus moderates
Pings: 1 - Written by Jafo Sunday, 19 March 2006
The militant group Hamas has completed the formation of a Palestinian cabinet and expects the President, Mahmoud Abbas, to approve it even though moderate factions have refused to join. The Prime Minister-designate, Ismail Haniyeh, has said he will present the names to Mr Abbas. He declined to identify any ministers, but Hamas sources said party members would head key ministries, including the interior, foreign affairs and finance. Hamas's failure to attract any coalition partners and its decision to appoint its own members to top positions could bolster US and Israeli efforts to isolat...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Belarus fears violence in election aftermath
Pings: 1 - Written by Jafo Sunday, 19 March 2006
There are no campaign posters or billboards here, not even for President Alexander Lukashenko, who otherwise thoroughly orchestrated his re-election Sunday to a third term. The security services barred campaigning in the city's center. Handing out leaflets - even possessing them - risked arrest. Dozens were jailed in the prelude to the vote, some of them senior campaign workers for the democratic opposition. The results of the election on Sunday, widely denounced here and abroad as undemocratic, were a foregone conclusion. But the vote was only aWrite Comment (0 Comments)

French Students Clash With Police
Pings: 1 - Written by Jafo Saturday, 18 March 2006
Students clashed with police and activists rampaged through a McDonald's restaurant in the capital Saturday as some 500,000 people joined demonstrations across France to protest a government plan to loosen job protections. The rallies and marches were largely peaceful, but police fired tear gas during confrontations with stone-throwing youths in Paris. Four officers and 12 protesters were injured, and police arrested at least 59 people, Paris officials said. The protests against the law were the biggest show yet of escalating anger that is testing the strength of the conservative governme...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Analysis: Hamas fails to form coalition
Pings: 1 - Written by Jafo Saturday, 18 March 2006
Hamas has failed to form a coalition government in its first test in power as more complications await the Palestinians after the movement submits Sunday a list of new Cabinet ministers to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas - a list that excludes all other factions which refused to join the first Hamas-led government. After four weeks of consultations and negotiations with the different factions, Hamas has found itself almost alone. The initial euphoria of its sweeping victory in the Janu...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Pings: 1 - Written by Jafo Saturday, 18 March 2006
An estimated 50,000 mourners joined a two-hour ceremony in Belgrade Saturday to honour Slobodan Milosevic, the Serb leader and accused war criminal who died last weekend. They cried "Slobo," his nickname, as they wept and expressed their anger about his death outside the parliament buildings in Belgrade. U.S. Willing to Talk With Iran About Iraq
Pings: 1 - Written by Jafo Thursday, 16 March 2006
The United States said Thursday it was prepared to talk with Iran about Iraq, but said any discussions must be restricted to that topic and not include other contentious subjects like Tehran's suspected nuclear weapons program. Zalmay Khalilzad, the U.S. ambassador to Iraq, is authorized to talk with Iran about Iraq, much as the United States has talked with Iran about issues relating to Afgha...Write Comment (0 Comments)

The new U.N. Human Rights Council will face its first test when members are elected on May 9, with supporters and opponents watching to see if countries that are major offenders win seats and whether the United States will even be a candidate. Pings: 1 - Written by Jafo Thursday, 16 March 2006
Hundreds of people lined up Thursday to pay their last respects to Slobodan Milosevic at a decaying museum once used to hold gifts to former Yugoslav dictator Josip Broz Tito. Milosevic's casket was carried into the Belgrade museum for two days of public viewing before the former Yugoslav president is buried in his hometown.
